Next-Generation Vision
Protection for Your Children

Thompson Rivers Family Optometry takes a proactive, detail-oriented approach to children’s ocular health and vision. Many eye problems can appear early in life, ranging from minor annoyances to severe health risks. Our team is standing by to provide your family with effective help for all of them.

Why Are Children’s Eye
Exams Important?

Routine eye exams are a key part of maintaining ocular health and clear vision for people of all ages. Having an eye doctor examine your children’s eyes is the best way to learn about vision problems and eye diseases before they can cause severe or permanent consequences—and take steps to correct these issues.

Eye exams can also prevent children with vision problems from being misdiagnosed with behavioural conditions. You can’t count on your children to self-identify vision problems since a child whose vision has been impaired since birth may assume their eyesight is normal. An eye doctor can help you learn about all of your children’s particular eye care needs.

How Children Have Their First Eye Exam

Since 80% of what children learn in school is visual, regular eye exams can also help prevent vision problems from impacting their academic development. According to The Canadian Association of Optometrists, children should have their first annual eye exam between 6 and 9 months old. However, if you are concerned about your children’s vision, it’s best to bring them in sooner.

When you take your child to our practice for an eye exam, we look for potential vision problems and ocular health risks by asking questions and running tests. At the end of the exam, we’ll recommend the next steps for treating or managing any issues we’ve uncovered.

What Takes Place During
a Children’s Eye Exam?

Our children’s eye exams include:

  • A series of questions about your child’s medical history and family medical history so we can learn about potential risks to their ocular health or vision.
  • Tests to measure your child’s visual acuity, binocular vision, refraction, and general eye health.
  • Recommendations and prescriptions for vision correction devices or medication your child needs.
  • Tips and strategies to help you and your child maintain their ocular health.
  • Opportunities to raise any other concerns you or your child have about their ocular health.

Remember to bring your child’s current glasses or contact lenses to their eye exam (if they use any). When we need to update these devices, it’s easier to have the originals on hand for reference.
