What Counts as an
Eye Emergency?

Eye emergencies can be any injury, trauma, or sudden change to your vision. This includes:

  • Sudden or severe inflammation of the eye area
  • Acute loss of vision (full or partial)
  • A large or sudden group of floaters and flashes of light
  • Acute eye pain
  • Sudden or severe headaches or vertigo

What Causes an Eye Emergency?

There are many possible causes of an eye emergency, but some of the most common include:

  • An impact to the head or face
  • A puncture or scratch to the eye area
  • Chemical exposure
  • Foreign objects entering the eye area
  • A medical condition, such as acute angle-closure glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • An eye infection, such as conjunctivitis (pink eye)

Eye emergencies can also be caused by many other factors. If you aren’t sure whether your situation is an eye emergency, err on the side of caution and seek help as soon as possible.

How to Prevent Eye Emergencies

Many eye emergencies, such as those caused by accidents or injuries, can be prevented through proper risk management and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Safety glasses are a vital tool to prevent eye emergencies caused by construction work, whether you’re on a job site or completing a DIY project at home. Sports glasses can also provide added protection and durability for on the field, the court, or the rink.

If you need safety glasses, we can assist you with a fitting for a prescription or non-prescription pair. We are happy to help you keep your eyes safe.
